Brake and clutch plausibility interlocks, and unlocking left-foot braking.

Under drive-by-wire (E-Gas) engine management, the mechanical linkage between the accelerator pedal and the throttle valve is completely eliminated. To prevent unintended acceleration hazards, automotive safety certification mandates redundant cross-checking between the driver’s braking commands and engine torque generation.

On the VAG 1.8T platform, Bosch ME7.5 incorporates a Dual-Contact Brake Switch Safety Circuit and a Clutch Pedal Position Switch (F36). Together, these sensors control Cruise Control (GRA), upshift flare damping, and the notorious Left-Foot Braking (LFB) Torque Cutout. Understanding this architecture allows an engineer to diagnose electrical DTCs (P0571, P16955) and safely unlock unrestricted left-foot braking for track and rally driving.

59.1. Brake Switch Plausibility Diagnostics & DTC P0571 / 16955#

The factory dual brake switch mounted above the pedal arm is prone to physical misalignment, broken plastic ratchet teeth, and contact pitting:

  • Because Switch F and Switch F47 operate in inverse logic, a failure where both contacts close or open simultaneously indicates an electrical short, broken harness, or cracked switch body.
  • When ME7.5 flags P0571, it assumes the driver’s braking intent is untrusted. As an active failsafe, the ECU disables the Cruise Control stalk buttons entirely and illuminates the Electronic Power Control (EPC) lamp.
  • Diagnostic Note: Installing aftermarket LED brake light bulbs without load resistors often triggers false P0571 codes because the low impedance of incandescent filaments is missing, causing residual leakage voltage to hold Pin 56 high!

59.2. Left-Foot Braking (LFB) Torque Cutout Mechanics#

To prevent stuck-throttle runaway incidents, factory Bosch ME7.5 firmware incorporates an aggressive safety override:

  • The Trigger: If the driver presses the brake pedal (B_brems = 1) while simultaneously holding the accelerator pedal depressed (wped_w > 15%), an internal countdown timer begins ticking.
  • The Factory Cutout: After 1.5\text{ seconds} of concurrent brake and throttle application, ME7.5 initiates the **Brake Priority Torque Cut (Fahrbrems-Abschaltung - FBA)**.
  • The Physical Reaction: The ECU commands the electronic throttle plate G186 shut to idle position (6.5\text{°}) and cuts fuel injector pulsewidths to zero, ignoring all driver accelerator pedal inputs until the brake pedal is released for at least 2.0\text{ seconds}.
Why Track and Autocross Drivers Must Disable LFB Cutout#

In performance driving, Left-Foot Braking is an essential vehicle dynamics tool:

  1. Weight Transfer Control: Dragging the brake pedal with the left foot while keeping throttle pinned with the right foot shifts vertical load to the front tires, eliminating corner-entry understeer.
  2. Turbocharger Spool Maintenance: Holding throttle open while braking loads the engine against the brake pads, keeping exhaust mass flow high so that full boost (> 1.2\text{ bar}) is instantaneously available upon corner exit.
  3. With the factory 1.5\text{ s} timer active, attempting to left-foot brake into a bend kills engine power completely, leaving the driver stranded mid-corner!

59.3. Calibration Protocol: Unlocking Unrestricted Left-Foot Braking#

To permanently unlock continuous left-foot braking without throwing EPC faults or killing engine power:

Calibration SymbolFlash Offset (032LP)Factory ValueTuned ValueEngineering Effect
NFBA0x012F400x0640 (1600\text{ rpm})0x1F40 (8000\text{ rpm})Minimum engine speed to activate brake torque cut. Set above rev limit!
TFBA0x012F420x0096 (1.50\text{ s})0x0FE0 (25.4\text{ s})Continuous simultaneous brake/throttle timer delay before intervention
MDMAXFBA0x012F460x0000 (0\text{ Nm})0x0190 (400\text{ Nm})Maximum allowed torque clamp during active braking

By setting NFBA above redline (8000\text{ rpm}), the firmware condition for brake throttle cut can never be satisfied during driving, granting the driver 100\% analog left-foot braking authority while preserving normal cruise control disengagement!

59.4. Clutch Pedal Switch (F36 - ECU Pin 39) Dynamics#

The clutch pedal incorporates a single normally-closed switch (F36) linked to ECU Pin 39:

  • Upshift Flare Suppression: When the driver depresses the clutch to upshift, Pin 39 goes low (B_kuppl = 1). ME7.5 immediately activates the anti-jerk damper (ARMIN), cutting ignition timing by -12\text{° KW} to arrest rotational inertia and prevent engine RPM from flaring upward between shifts.
  • Cruise Control Deactivation: Instantly unlatches B_gra, returning vehicle control to manual pedal operation.
  • Motorsport Launch Control Trigger: As detailed in Section 54, B_kuppl serves as the primary hardware gatekeeper for 2-step stationary launch control and no-lift shifting (NLS).
