Decoding 8-character filenames, the EPK, VAG/Bosch part numbers, and four real files.

Bosch calibration and firmware filesets follow a rigorous, deterministic engineering taxonomy developed across Motronic generations. Every filename, container tag, software identifier, and hardware stamp conveys precise architectural, vehicular, and calibration lineage. Understanding this schema enables an engineer to decode the vehicle platform, transmission, engine family, software revision, emissions standard, and calibration role directly from an 8-character filename without loading the binary into an editor.

2.1. The Bosch 8-Character ASAP2/DAMOS Naming Grammar#

Every factory Bosch internal calibration filename (as found in .dam, .sgm, .hex, .ols, and .a2l archives) adheres to a strict 8-character stem format:

2.3. VAG Customer Part Number (Teilenummer / Kundennummer) Architecture#

Volkswagen Audi Group (VAG) employs a modular, 9-to-11 character alphanumeric part numbering taxonomy governed by corporate engineering standard VW 105 00 / VW 105 14. On a Bosch ME7.5 Engine Control Unit, the VAG Kundennummer (Customer Part Number) is the ultimate legal and commercial identifier. It dictates not only physical fitment, but the complete powertrain specification: engine code, displacement, compression ratio, turbocharger variant, emissions certification tier, transmission pairing, and vehicle anti-theft immobilizer generation.

2.3.2. Main Assembly & Electrical System Group (Middle 3 Digits)#

The middle 3-digit triplet categorizes the part within VAG's universal parts catalog (ETKA) master taxonomy:

  • 906 — Engine Electrical, Motronic Engine Management, and Fuel Injection:
    • Introduced during the late Mk4 / B6 platform transition to designate high-integration microcontrollers and flash modules.
    • Found on late-cycle longitudinal ME7.5 units, such as 8E0 909 518 AF / 8E0 909 518 AK (Audi A4 B6 1.8T AMB) and specialized emissions modules (06A 909 032 xx).
  • 909 — Electronic Control Units & Distributed Embedded Controllers:
2.3.3. Subsystem & Component Base Number (Next 3 Digits)#

The third 3-digit triplet specifies the exact controller family and platform mounting geometry:

  • 032 — Bosch ME7.5 Transverse 1.8T 20V Controller Family:
    • Used on early non-E-Gas 1.8T AGU / AEB engines equipped with mechanical throttle cables and 80-pin / 68-pin ECU housings.
  • 018 — Audi TT / Audi S3 & Early Platform Transverse / Longitudinal ME7.5:

  • 012 — Legacy Bosch M3.8.3 / Early ME5 Cable-Throttle 1.8T:
2.3.4. Calibration, Revision & Homologation Suffix (Trailing 1–2 Letters)#

The trailing letter suffix is the single most critical element of the VAG part number. It is not a simple sequential revision code. Instead, each suffix represents a fully locked combination of:

  1. Engine Code & Power Rating: (e.g., AWW 150 PS vs. AWP 180 PS vs. AUQ 180 PS vs. BAM 225 PS).
  2. Transmission & Drivetrain: (e.g., 5-Speed Manual 02J, 6-Speed Manual 02M, 5-Speed Tiptronic 09A / AG5, 4-Speed Automatic 01M, Haldex Quattro).
  3. Emissions Standard & Market: (Euro 2, Euro 3, Euro 4, US EPA Tier 1 / LEV-I, US California CARB ULEV).
  4. Hardware Revision (HW-TTNR): (PCB revision, wideband LSU 4.2 vs. narrowband, EMI filtering).
  5. Anti-Theft Generation: (WFS2 / Immo 2 with 17-digit VIN vs. WFS3 / Immo 3 with 14-digit immobilizer ID).
2.3.5. Exhaustive Master Suffix Catalog: 06A 906 032 xx Series#

2.3.7. ETKA Spare Parts Suffix Modifiers: X Exchange Flag#

When ordering replacement ECUs through Volkswagen Audi dealership channels or looking up part numbers in ETKA:

  • The Trailing X Suffix (Austauschteil / Remanufactured Unit):
    • As production matured, VAG eliminated inventory overhead by consolidating older part numbers into backward-compatible late revisions.
    • In ETKA, 06A 906 032 HS and 06A 906 032 JJ were officially superseded by 06A 906 032 LP and subsequently 06A 906 032 PL.
    • A dealership servicing a 2002 GTI 1.8T (originally fitted with 032HS) would flash or install an 032LP or 032PL service replacement unit.
  • Factory Supersession Chains (Entfall mit Ersatz):
2.3.8. Physical Casing Sticker vs. Diagnostic Memory Discrepancies#

When reverse-engineering an ECU in the field, calibration engineers must differentiate between the physical aluminum casing sticker and the active firmware memory image:

 └─────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────┘
  1. Physical Sticker Authenticity: The paper sticker on the aluminum housing reflects the ECU's assembly state when it departed the Salzgitter or Wolfsburg engine plant.
    • The casing sticker will permanently read 06A 906 032 HS (HW 0261207446).
    • The diagnostic scanner (VCDS measuring block 081 / Service 0x1A) will report 06A 906 032 LP with software version 0005.
    • Tuning Rule: Never rely on the physical housing sticker when selecting a DAMOS definition file. Always dump the binary or perform a KWP2000 diagnostic ID read to extract the true internal VAG part number (0x1A 0x91) and software compilation name (0x1A 0x94).
  2. KWP2000 Diagnostic Interrogation (Service ID 0x1A): When connected via OBD-II, diagnostic scanners read the string stored in the flash ROM sector at 0x010000–0x010400.
  3. Cross-Flashing Divergence: If a tuner cross-flashes an 06A906032LP binary into an 06A906032HS or 06A906032JJ physical ECU (which is 100% hardware-compatible due to shared 0261207446/0261207955 PCB architecture):

2.4. Bosch Hardware Typteilenummer (HW-TTNR) & Physical PCB Architecture#

Bosch stamps every production Engine Control Unit with a 10-digit Typteilenummer (HW-TTNR) formatted as 0 261 20X XXX. While software revisions change frequently via dealership flashes or model-year updates, the HW-TTNR identifies the physical silicon bill of materials (BOM), printed circuit board (PCB) trace routing, integrated circuit (IC) driver stages, and sensor conditioning interfaces.

2.4.5. Cross-Flash Hardware Compatibility & Inter-Generation Swapping Rules#

When cross-flashing or physically swapping ECUs across different vehicles, observe the following physical hardware compatibility laws:

CROSS-FLASHING COMPATIBILITY MATRIX

Source Hardware BoxAllowed Target SoftwareProhibited / Fatal Swaps
Gen 4: 0261208xxxGen 4 (LP, PL, SK)CANNOT flash to 512KB boxes

(0261207777/0261208053)Standard 180PS (AWP)boxes without disabling EGT DTCs (TABGBTS sensor missing on car).
  1. The 512 KB vs. 1024 KB Barrier (Fatal Rule):
    • If firmware from an Audi TT 225 (8N0906018CB / 8N0906018BE) is flashed into a Golf/Jetta 180 PS ECU (06A906032LP):
      • The ECU will immediately throw hard DTCs P1453 / 17861 (Exhaust Gas Temperature Sensor 1 Open/Short to B+) and P1457 / 17865 (EGT Sensor 1 Range/Performance) because the physical thermocouple conditioning circuit and pins 107/108 are unpopulated on the standard 032LP PCB.
      • To run 225 PS code on standard hardware, the EGT diagnostic path must be suppressed via DFPM codeword CDATR = 0 and error class zeroing in CLAATR (see DOC 33 / DOC 34).

2.6. VAG SGML Container Specification (.sgm) Architecture#

In the official factory VAG flashing toolchain, calibration packages are distributed in SGML (Standard Generalized Markup Language) text containers. These containers encapsulate both metadata and the binary image:

container_info:
  source_file: "i22ic04g.sgm" # Original Bosch internal filename
  date: "F22ic04g.sgm" # Long internal compilation date/name
version_type: "cvt_pfu_01" # Container type (Parameter Flash Update)
version_content: "1.01" # Schema version of container format

software_revisions:
  short_version: "V004" # SW-VERSION-KURZ (diagnostic reported)
  long_version: "F22ic04g" # SW-VERSION-LANG (engineering release name)

ecu_identification:
  vehicle_description: "GOLF A3, VW 340" # Target platform designation

  checksum_lin: "045158D9" # Pre-calculated 32-bit linear flash checksum
Diagnostic Identification Protocol#

When a diagnostic tool (such as Ross-Tech VCDS or a factory VAS 5051/5052 tester) interrogates an ME7.5 ECU via KWP2000 (ISO 14230) Service ID 0x1A (Read ECU Identification), the ECU responds with these exact parameters:

  1. 0x1A 0x91: VAG Part Number (e.g. 06A906032LP ).
  2. 0x1A 0x92: Software Version Kurz (e.g. 0005 or V004).
  3. 0x1A 0x94: Software Version Lang (e.g. F22ic04g or h24bw05g).
  4. 0x1A 0x97: System Identification / Engine Code (e.g. 1.8l 5V R4/1V G ).
Platform Codes in vehicle_description#
  • VW 340: Volkswagen Golf MK4 Platform (A4 / Typ 1J).
  • VW 341: Volkswagen Bora Platform (A4 / Typ 1J2).

2.9. Engineering Workspace & Release Packaging Standards#

To prevent regressions across complex ECU engineering projects, workspace assets and software deliverables must follow strict file naming, versioning, and directory management protocols:

  1. Specification Document Naming Convention:
    • Technical subsystem documents are numbered sequentially in root documentation directories: \mathbf{DOC\_[Index]\_[Subsystem\_Name].md}
      • DOC_30_ME75_Complete_Processor_to_DAMOS_and_Connector_Pin_Trace.md
      • DOC_31_ME75_DAMOS_Calibration_Architecture_Control_Loops_and_Firmware_Execution.md
      • DOC_32_ME75_Port_Architecture_and_Empirical_Baseline_Trace.md
      • DOC_33_ME75_DFPM_Fault_Path_Management_and_Diagnostic_Codewords.md
      • DOC_34_ME75_DTC_Manager_and_YAML_Tuning_Architecture.md
      • DOC_35_ME75_DAMOS_to_ECU_Master_Cross_Reference_and_Compatibility_Matrix.md
    • DOC_30_ME75_Complete_Processor_to_DAMOS_and_Connector_Pin_Trace.md

    • DOC_34_ME75_DTC_Manager_and_YAML_Tuning_Architecture.md
    • DOC_35_ME75_DAMOS_to_ECU_Master_Cross_Reference_and_Compatibility_Matrix.md
  1. Binary & Calibration Patching Versioning Scheme:
    • Firmware binaries and patching utilities adhere to Semantic Versioning (v<Major>.<Minor>.<Patch>): \mathbf{[ECU\_Part\_Number]\_v[Major].[Minor].[Patch].[ext]}
      • Baseline Stock Binary: 06A906032JJ_stock.bin
      • Tuned & Patched Binary: 06A906032JJ_v2.39.bin
      • Python Patch Utility: patch_v232_unified_asm_features.py
    • Baseline Stock Binary: 06A906032JJ_stock.bin
    • Tuned & Patched Binary: 06A906032JJ_v2.39.bin
    • Python Patch Utility: patch_v232_unified_asm_features.py
  1. Release Packaging & Overlay Archive Format:
    • Bundled firmware updates and asset releases follow the overlay archive standard: \mathbf{[Project]\_[Target]\_v[Major].[Minor].[Patch]\_[YYYYMMDD].zip}
    • Overlay archives unpack cleanly from the project root without nested duplicate top-level folders, safely updating only modified calibration and documentation files while strictly preserving user configuration files.
