Coil saturation, dwell maps, and converting to an R8 2.0T FSI coil pack.
In high-boost turbocharged 1.8T 20V applications (particularly running elevated cylinder pressures on K04, Garrett G-Series, or E85 fuels), ignition reliability is the primary bottleneck. Under high charge density and rich fueling, the electrical breakdown resistance of the spark plug gap increases drastically. If the ignition coil cannot generate sufficient secondary voltage to jump the gap, the spark is extinguished by turbulence and pressure—a failure mode known as spark blowout.
To overcome spark blowout, tuners frequently retrofit the high-output Audi R8 / 2.0T FSI ignition coils (06E 905 115 E / Eldor). However, because the R8 coils possess different primary winding resistance and magnetic core saturation characteristics, running them on factory 1.8T dwell maps will either under-charge the coils or overheat internal driver transistors.

29.1. The Physics of Inductive Coil Saturation & Primary Dwell#
An ignition coil operates as an energy storage transformer. When the ECU pulses the logic trigger line (Pins 94, 95, 102, 103 via push-pull driver CK110 / 30397), the coil's internal MOSFET switches primary winding current to ground.
- Current Rise & Inductive Time Constant (\tau): Primary current rises according to the RL exponential time constant: I(t) =\frac{U_{\text{batt}}}{R_{\text{pri}}} \left( 1 - e^{-\frac{t}{\tau}} \right) \quad \text{where } \tau =\frac{L_{\text{pri}}}{R_{\text{pri}}}
- The Danger of Under-Dwell: If primary dwell time is cut short (e.g., 1.8\text{ ms} at 14V), current only reaches 5.5\text{ A}. Because stored energy scales with the square of current (E =\frac{1}{2} L I^2), the resulting spark energy drops by 40\%, causing severe high-RPM misfires.
- The Danger of Over-Dwell: Once the magnetic core reaches full flux saturation, the coil can store no additional magnetic energy. Any further current flow dissipates strictly as I^2 R resistive heat within the coil casing, leading to boiling internal epoxy potting, shorted primary windings, and blistered rubber boots.

Performance Benefits with R8 Coils#
- Gap Widening: With 54\text{ mJ} spark energy and calibrated 2.85\text{ ms} dwell, spark plug gap can be widened from congested 0.022\text{''} (0.55\text{ mm}) back to 0.028\text{''} (0.70\text{ mm}) on NGK BKR7E / BKR8EIX plugs without blowout under 25+\text{ psi} boost.
- Improved Flame Propagation: The longer spark duration (1.85\text{ ms}) burns lean air-fuel mixtures more completely, stabilizing idle vacuum and reducing cyclic knock retard (
dwkrz).
