NWST cam phasing, scavenging, and the engagement windows that exploit it.

In the VAG 1.8T 20V transverse engine family (AWP, AWW, AUQ, AUM), the cylinder head utilizes an electro-hydraulic chain tensioner acting on the timing chain linking the exhaust camshaft (driven by the timing belt) to the intake camshaft. The camshaft phasing subsystem—designated in Bosch engineering German as NWST (Nockenwellensteuerung)—is controlled by low-side solenoid N205 connected to Pin 112.

While early 1.8T engines (such as AEB/AGU) lacked cam phasing entirely, ME7.5 utilizes stepped intake cam advance to achieve two distinct thermodynamic goals: internal exhaust gas recirculation (internal EGR) for emissions compliance and accelerated turbocharger spool-up via dynamic scavenging.

19.1. Hydraulic & Mechanical Operation of the Cam Adjuster#

  • De-Energized State (N205 Solenoid OFF / 0% Duty):
    • Engine oil pressure (> 1.5\text{ bar}) drives the tensioner piston downward, taking up slack on the top chain run and lengthening the bottom run.
    • The intake camshaft rotates forward by 22\text{°} Crankshaft Angle (11\text{°} Camshaft Angle) into the Advanced Position.
    • Intake valve opening moves from 14\text{° ATDC} forward to 8\text{° BTDC}.
    • Valve overlap increases to 26\text{°} Crankshaft Angle.
    • Operating Realm: Mid-range acceleration (1800\text{ to }4800\text{ rpm}) under engine load > 70\%.
  • Energized State (N205 Solenoid ON / 100% Duty):

19.2. The Thermodynamic Physics of Scavenging & Spool-Up#

When the intake camshaft is advanced by 22\text{°} during spool-up, the intake valves open while the piston is still completing its exhaust stroke.

  1. Dynamic Scavenging: As high-velocity exhaust gases expand into the turbine housing, they create a momentary depression (negative pressure wave) at the combustion chamber exhaust port.
  2. Fresh Charge Induction: Because the intake valve is already open, this pressure drop siphons fresh air-fuel mixture directly across the combustion chamber from the intake manifold.
  3. Turbo Spool Acceleration: The extra air-fuel mass expanding directly into the turbine housing significantly increases the enthalpy (\Delta H) across the turbine wheel, slashing turbocharger transient response time by up to 300\text{ ms}.

19.3. Calibration Parameters in Bosch ME7.5 (06A906032LP)#

The activation of VVT is governed by strict window comparator scalars:

Performance Tuning Strategy for Upgraded Turbochargers#
  1. Lowering Lower Speed Threshold (NMSNW): Lowering engagement from 1800\text{ rpm} to 1600\text{ rpm} brings VVT scavenging online earlier, helping larger compressor wheels (such as the K04-001 or GT28RS) spool off-idle without lag.
    • KFZW (Cam Retarded): Base timing map active when VVT is OFF.
    • KFZW2 (Cam Advanced): Alternate timing map active when VVT is ON. Because advancing the intake cam increases effective dynamic cylinder pressure and volumetric efficiency, the engine becomes more knock-prone. KFZW2 must run 2.0\text{°} to 4.0\text{°} less ignition advance than KFZW across the VVT active window to prevent knock retard intervention.
  2. Extending Upper Speed Threshold (NMENW): The factory disables VVT at 4800\text{ rpm} because the stock K03s exhaust turbine housing (4.5\text{ cm}^2) creates excessive backpressure, causing hot exhaust gas to push backward into the intake manifold (exhaust reversion). With an upgraded high-flow turbine housing or tubular exhaust manifold, backpressure is greatly reduced, allowing VVT to remain engaged safely up to 5200\text{ rpm} to sustain mid-range torque.
  3. Ignition Advance Synchronization (KFZW vs. KFZW2): Bosch ME7.5 maintains two distinct base ignition timing maps:
